I hope not because that’s the way I’ve done it ever since leaving my parents’ house at 17. We always had the Official Cat Ramen Shirt Christmas Day opening growing up, but that’s in part because our grandparents were there too. Once on my own, for some reason it seemed to make more sense (to me) to have a nice dinner and open the presents on Christmas eve. That left Christmas day to do whatever. Not much was open when I was younger, so it could be a day of quiet, relaxation and reflection. Some of my friends always did it on Christmas eve … especially as I recall my Catholic friends. Often they went to Midnight Mass and also had services on Christmas day. My church had a midnight service, but they more or less suggested adults only. And unless Christmas happened to be Sunday, there was no Christmas day service.

All most all the Asian countries celebrate it, but you won’t find much for the lunar new year in Japan. The reason why the Japanese don’t celebrate it is told that in 1872, there were intercalary months the new year became 13 months and the government found it hard today wage for 13 months to people, so Japan stopped using lunar calendar and switched to using solar calendar but it still is not sure if that was the reason Japan changed to use solar calendar. Chinese town in Japan, of course, celebrate Lunar new year, and you can see the annual lantern festival in Nagasaki. It used to be a festival only for Chinese people living there to celebrate the lunar new year, but now it became an event for the whole Nagasaki city for people to enjoy the Chinese culture.
